"But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some of honour, and some to dishonour."
Not everyone that comes to church, comes to hear what 'thus saith the Lord God'. Some have other motives for attending church. Some come for the socializing, some for the choir, some for the extra activities offered for the kids, some for the gossip, some just to stir up trouble, and there are some who come to worship.
2 Timothy uses the term 'a great house' to refer to a church with Truth and Spirit in it, and then gold, silver, wood, and earth to refer to types of people. The terms of honour and dishonour are indications of the 2 destinations (the 2 paths) that are described in the bible, one good for you and the other not so good!
People that are considered 'gold' are those who have purified their souls in a similar manner to how gold is purified. Heated up (go through hard times), the impurities rise to the top (sinful ways are exposed) and scraped away (sinful ways changed), and then cooled off (times get easier - blessings flow). Then the process is repeated over and over again until the desired level of purity is attained.
'Silver' people go through a similar process, but they are not given the same level of value because their nature is not as willing to change. They retain wonderful value, just slightly less holy than those classified as gold.
Then you have those who attend church who can have all kinds of marvelous gifts and talents and find a way to fit in and be a excellent part of the church, UNTIL it starts getting hot, until times start getting tough. Depending on how strong their bible knowledge is and how deep their relationship with Jesus is, will determine how much heat it takes before they are lit on fire and burn up! Enough trouble comes and they quit and run. This is what is meant by 'also of wood'.
'... and earth.' What can be said about the earth people in a church? This category is reserved for those folks who can't seem to be spiritual, no matter what you do! Always caught up in appearances, focused on natural/worldly events, caught up in causes and the politics of the day - often running their mouth without thinking first (causing many offences) and many times 'missing the point' of what is being taught. Constantly looking to the world for answers instead of turning to the Lord, and almost always completely unaware that they are 'carnal' and worldly.
'some of dishonour'... are those who are rebellious to God's Word in one fashion or another, they simply refuse to change, to be transformed, they just won't submit to the Authority of God and purify their lives.
This group are the 'wood and earth'. Vessels of dishonour do not like to be corrected, in fact will often lash out at others or try to deflect the correction to anyone else, to avoid looking at their own lives.
Is it possible that God has vessels of dishonour in a church for the purpose of testing and trying the vessels of honour? To help them to purify and learn to control their emotions, actions, and words? Just a thought.
Now, 'some of honour'... are those who apply the principals taught out of the Word of God and achieve spiritual results and will attain the salvation they seek.
This group are the Gold and Silver. The fire doesn't destroy them, just makes them better! In fact vessels of honour are often the subject of teasing, ridicule or attack from other church members, those that are vessels of dishonour.
This happens when you apply the scriptures to your life. Then it becomes obvious all those who don't apply the scriptures. And those that don't apply the scriptures don't like to be shown up and embarrassed!
Don't believe me? Try it for yourself.
Start fasting regularly, praying multiple times a day, reading the Bible out loud for yourself at least 2 times a day, asking God to open your mind to understand Truth and have a deeper walk with Him and supernatural experiences, asking for help to win souls. Do this everyday for 60-90 days. And watch what happens.
30 days of breaking open the scriptures continues...
With Love,
